Student Development
Student Organizations Promoting Underrepresented Groups
Student organizations at Michigan Tech enhance the experiences of affiliated students and campus life overall by providing early support to the engineering professions and with academic life. They also support campus-wide projects ranging from mentoring programs to outreach to the Michigan Tech community-at-large and educational events such as professional speakers discussing current trends in the engineering professions.
Employers benefit through their visible support of such groups and their mission to promote the presence and impact of historically underrepresented groups in the engineering professions and increase the public's awareness of such contributions.
The Michigan Tech's well-established chapters of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) and the National Society for Black Engineers (NSBE) are two such organizations.
SWE aims to encourage women to consider careers in engineering, promotes academic and professional achievement, promotes the image of the engineering profession and fosters diversity. NSBE's mission is to increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community through academic and professional offerings.
Corporate Benefit
Companies benefit through such efforts through association with sponsored programs and enhanced visibility on campus. Each organization includes a sponsor's name on their promotional brochures and posters, generating greater visibility for the Company's support of diversity outreach and education programs which provide service to and increase awareness in the Michigan Tech community. Supporting corporations are extended an invitation to attend SWE or NSBE membership meetings or sponsored campus programs.
